How do I travel to/from NAS Whidbey Island? (Current as of Feb 17)
- NAS Whidbey Island almost brings new meaning to the term "isolated." It is located in a very lovely area, on an island (of course), roughly 2 hours drive north of Seattle (depending on traffic). The base actually consists of 2 separate bases, the Naval Air Station (Ault Field) and the Seaplane Base. Many distances are long. At least one auto rental agency (Enterprise) will pick up, during normal working hours, at the air terminal, but Enterprise will not do one-way rentals. There is a Navy Lodge located at the Seaplane Base, which is a fair distance from the air terminal. I do not believe that there is an on-base shuttle bus. Some taxis may be allowed on base (not confirmed). It would be a mistake to arrive without some form of transportation arranged, or possibly getting some help from a fellow passenger, who has a car on the base.
- There is one shuttle service that can come onto the base, and pick up passengers. Reservations are required. Their schedules and rates are available online: at the SeaTac Shuttle Website. Almost directly across from the air terminal there is a Wendy's, which is open every day. Turn left at the Wendy's, and walk one block to Intruder Street. Turn right on Intruder Street, then walk past the galley to BEQ 2701 (ahead, on the right side -- there is prominent signage at this building). In front of the building, there is a sign for a shuttle stop.
How do I travel to/from NAS Whidbey Island using commercial bus only? (Current as of Aug 10)
- See this document (courtesy of John Fleming) for how to travel to/from Seattle and McChord AFB using commercial bus only (cheaper than using the shuttles but journey takes approx 7 hours).
