Local Expert Advice!

Cadiz Ferry: May come in handy if you rent a car from doyospain.com and they don't have cars available in Rota or if you want to go to the train station in Cadiz. A Ferry departs from Rota to Cadiz several times per day (approx a 30 min ride). To get to the ferry terminal by foot (fairly long walk but flat/downhill grade) exit the Rota gate and turn left on Calle Zorilla (same street the National Police station is on where you get your passport stamped). Follow the street downhill till you get to the waterfront, turn right then walk along the water until you see a big open concrete area on your left that sticks out into the water. This is the Rota Marina. The ferry terminal is a small building (where you purchase tickets) way out at the end of this concrete area. "How Do I...?"

1. How do I phone Rota numbers from off base? Just drop the "34" country code. As in other countries, there is no need to add a zero to the beginning of the number.

2. How do I get my passport stamped properly when transiting Rota? Note: if you are just transiting Rota and don’t plan to leave the installation then this does not apply to you! (Current as of Sep 2008)

Take your passport and AMC boarding pass (this is your proof you entered Spain on a military flight and it also has your "Flight Number" for a form you’ll need to fill out) and pickup a 24-hr gate pass on your way out the gate. Continue out the Rota Gate, straight through the first full traffic circle, turn into the first street on the left (Calle de Zorilla) and continue for one block. On the right you will see the Police Station (GPS: 36.626316, -6.354602). A small sign is mounted on the building wall at the entrance. Present your passport and boarding pass to whoever greets you. If you were not issued a boarding pass, present the small white slip of paper used as your personal day pass into the base. You were given this upon arrival at the terminal. The police won’t want this as proof, and will simply ask what date you arrived at the terminal. They will return your stamped (or provide a stub to carry with your passport) passport within several minutes. If you have a car, exit the Rota Gate and take the first road to the right. Immediately on the left there is a public parking lot. Leave your locked car here and follow the walking instructions. There is no parking available at the police station. This will be no more than a five minute walk.

Once you return to NS Rota just show your passport and the old day pass. The officer will look at both and issue a new day pass.

3. How do I travel between Rota and Jerez de la Frontera Airport to catch Ryanair Flights? (Current as of Sep 2008)

First route is to take a COMES coach to Jerez (around 5 euros, 30 minutes) and then a taxi or another bus to the Jerez airport. Lines M-050 & M-051 runs 5 & 10 times a day, respectively, between Jerez City and the Airport (around 0.85 euros, 30 minutes).

The COMES coaches travel several times a day from Rota to Seville with a stop in Jerez along the way. The fare on a COMES coach from Rota to Jerez is around 5 euros, 30 minutes. These coaches depart Rota from just outside the main gate at Rota.

Another (less expensive) route is Linea M-560 from Rota to Jerez City, then either Linea M-050 or Linea M-051 from Jerez City to Jerez Airport, 2.40 euros, about 75 minutes. COMES coach from Rota to Jerez, then either Linea M-050 or Linea M-051, around 5 euros, about an hour. Only one Linea M-560 bus per day from Rota to Jerez. COMES operates up to 4 coaches per day from Rota to Jerez.

4. How do I travel between Rota and Moron AB? (Current as of Aug 2009) You can always rent a car from the NEX Car Rental but the drop fee may be hefty ($150). So, a cheaper route is to take a bus from Rota to Puerto Santa Maria (3 euro) then take a train to Utrera (6 euro) or Seville (9 euro). From Utrera you can take a taxi (negotiate your price with the driver first!) and the 20-mile trip should cost approx 35 euros. The taxi cannot enter the station but hopefully you already have reservations at the billeting (Hotel de la Frontera) and they will come and get you at the gate.

5. How do I get from Rota to Faro? From the bus station (just outside Rota gate) take a bus to Seville's Estacion del Prado de San Sebastion bus station, then take the C4 city bus (short ride, luggage OK) to the Plaza de Armas bus station where you can get a bus to Faro Portugal.
