Catania City Bus Route #427 departs for Catania from in front of the Marinai Housing area. Tickets may be purchased at the NAS 1 NEX Customer Service Desk and cost 1 Euro (approx $1.40 as of May 2010). Tickets must be validated upon boarding the bus (if you do not validate the ticket, you can be fined) and each ticket is valid for 90 min after purchase on any city bus line.
According to the Customer Service Reps, tickets cannot be purchased from the bus driver. The bus proceeds to just across the street from the Main Gate of NAS 2, where it can be flagged down and boarded for the ride all the way to the Catania Central Bus & Train Station (approx a one hour ride over some rough roads!). This bus would allow one to get to the beach and the airport (via connection at central station). The return bus originates from the central station in Catania, stops at the NAS II gate and ends at Marinai Housing area.
Tickets can be purchased at ticket booths, tobacco shops (tabacchi), or newspaper kiosks around Catania. Additionally, tickets are available at the Navy Exchange on NAS I and the NEX Mini Mart on NAS II.
The times at Marinai for week days (Mon - Sat) are (as of Jun 09): 0600, 0650, 0800, 0900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1350, 1450, 1610, 1740, 1910, 2040, 2200, 2300

Local Expert Advice!
Off Base Dining:
- "Ristorante degli Amici" which is on the road to the Misterbianco shopping mall off to the left as you approach the mall (700 yards before). Has seafood specialize but has buffets of wonderful antipasti.
- A Casa casalinga which is in the Belpasso area at 4 Contrada Fondaco (about a thousand yards past the German war cemetery IF you go through Motta Sta Anastasia to reach it). Has seafood specialize but has buffets of wonderful antipasti.
- "Buongustaio" restaurant in Motta de Santa Anastasia (or just plain "Motta" if asking anyone on NAS Sigonella). The food is very good, very Sicilian, very moderately priced and the house wine is very good. Requires driving so ask the ITT office on NAS 1 Sigonella for directions.
"How Do I...?"
How do I travel between the Catania Airport and NAS Sigonella? (Current as of Dec 07)
The local orange bus AMT Route 457 (Weekday Schedule and Weekend/Holiday Schedule) departs Catania Airport about every 20 minutes from 0500 to 2330 and runs between the airport (Aeroporto) and the main train station (Stazione). This route costs 0.80 Euros.
From the main train station (Piazza Giovanni XXIII Stazione Centrale), which is also the main bus stop for the blue (coach) buses, catch a blue coach to "Sigonella NAS I". You get on the bus that has "RAMACCA" or "MINEO" on its scrolling destination sign. The two companies that go between the train station and Sigonella NAS I are either Etna or Interbus (fermata 13 near the Etna/Interbus building) or AST (fermata 14 nearer to the train station on an island in the middle of the AST parking lot). Both cost around 2 Euros per person one way (andatta). These blue buses stop at the fermata just outside the gate at NAS I. Between NAS I and NAS II, just use the free shuttle (a white bus).
Here’s some additional tips:
- The AST fermata 14 can have as many as 22 buses stopped there at the same time!!
- At the Piazza Giovanni XXIII Stazione Centrale, the Etna/Interbus bus stops (fermatas) are not the same as the AST bus stops (fermatas).
- In Italy, even if you are standing at a bus stop, it is very important to hold two fingers out from your side to get the bus driver to stop for you!!
- The blue buses do not run on Sundays in Italy.
Etna/Interbus http://www.etnatrasporti.it/ http://www.interbus.it/interbushtm/ Click on "Ricerca Orari", then Find CATANIA in the scroll down under partenze (departure) and find RAMACCA in the scroll down under arrivo (arrival) then hit either VAI or Ricerca
