Andrews AFB MD

How do I get from Andrews AFB to Travis AFB using Space-A?  (Current as of May 06)

There normally are not many other trans-continental flights originating from Andrews but, as of Jun 06, Medevac missions on KC135s or C17s have been going 3 times a week (usually Mon, Wed & Sat with a 0800 Showtime with a departure bout 2 hours later).  Normally 10 seats are available for Space-a travelers but if more passengers are hoping to get on, the terminal staff will try to get more seats released--sometimes at the last minute. All waiting passengers are usually accommodated, but if possible it is a good idea to have a signup date that is at least a week old instead of being a walk-in on that day.
Potential interim stops (where passengers can de-plane or others can board for the remainder of the flight) are Scott AFB IL, Peterson AFB and McCHord AFB.  Time on the ground at each stop is 1 to 2 hours so the flights usually arrive at Travis between 5 and 6 p.m.  The air crew has a RON there and usually departs for Miramar MCAS CA the next morning with a showtime of 0800.

The aircraft then returns to its home base which is usually Charleston AFB SC but sometimes McChord AFB WA. However, if the medical personnel on board are based at Andrews it will take them there first.  There is free long-term parking (no time limit) within easy walking distance of the Andrews terminal.

How do I travel between Andrews, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and BWI. Dulles or Reagan National Airports or the Greyhound Station?  (Current as of:  May 2007)

1.     An on-base shuttle may be available (check with the Pax desk or billeting for the latest info).  To get off base, engage in conversation with your fellow passengers.  It is quite possible that they would be happy to take you to your exact destination, the gate, or the Metro Station, if it happens to be on their way.  Also, Andrews has a “Share-A-Ride” program and is a free service provided by the Andrews commuters.   Look for the pickup points labeled with a brown and white “Share-A-Ride” sign.  You have an option of getting a taxi off-base.  Authorized taxi pick-up companies are Checker Cab, 301-864-7700, and Silver Cab, 301-577-2000.   During heightened Force Protection Conditions, taxis are prohibited on base and at other times you’ll need to pre-announce taxi pick-ups to the 316 SFS law enforcement desk at 301-981-2001/2002.

2.

3.     Finally, you always have the option of walking (in good weather).  It is a healthy walk with a carry-on (the best way to travel).  The gate is to the right out of the terminal about a mile or so (on the other side of the Exchange).

4.     There may be off-base bus schedules/ Metro maps at the PAX volunteer desk.  Outside the gate, cross the street to the bus stop shelter in front of the Quality Inn (near McDonalds).  Ask the driver to ensure that you have the bus to either the Branch Ave Metro station (closest) or the Suitland Metro Rail Station.  The fare is approx $1.35 (ask for a transfer ticket that you may be able to use for reduced fares later).

5.     .

6.     At the Metro Stop, trains only go one way back toward DC (Green Line towards Greenbelt).  Check the info on fares on the sign below the manned booth, and ask any questions if you need help.  Purchase tickets from the machines only for the required amount (the very reasonable price differs for the time of day and the day of the week).  You are at the southeast end of the Green Line, and you need to go to L’Enfant Plaza to change to the other lines.

  • If you want to go to BWI, stay on the Green Line to the last stop, Greenbelt (at its other end in the northeast), get off, and wait for the B30 bus which goes directly to BWI.  The shelter for the BWI bus is the 4th shelter outside the Metro Station.  The cost is minimal (seniors ride for 60 cents), and the ride goes up the Baltimore Washington Parkway through an agricultural experimental farm – a very scenic ride.  The bus stops twice at the terminal, and the second stop is for the AMC terminal (upstairs).  The USO is on the lower level to the right.
  • If you want to go to Dulles, take the Metrobus Route 5A from L’Enfant Plaza to Dulles.  Another option exists from Metro’s Orange Line from West Falls Church station using the Washington Flyer bus to Dulles. The Dulles USO (near the Starbucks on baggage claim level) can help with transportation.
  • If you want to go to Reagan National, then transfer to the Yellow Line at L’Enfant Plaza.  The Yellow Line goes to Reagan National.  The Reagan USO can help with transportation.
  • If you want to go to the Greyhound Station, then transfer to the Red Line at Gallery Place/Chinatown and head towards Glenmont. Get off at Union Station (2nd stop). The Greyhound station is next door to Union Station.

7.     Coming the other way, the above routes should work in reverse.

How do I travel between Andrews AFB and Dover AFB using ground transportation? (Current as of:  May 07)

1.     The “Best” way may be a one-way rental car.  Check with the large rental car companies (hint – start with Hertz).  If you are coming from Dover to Andrews then short-notice rentals on weekends (especially Sundays) may be difficult to arrange.

2.     If you want to go by commercial ground transportation then see the section above on how to get off-base and to the Metro Station.

3.     At the Metro Stop, trains only go one way, back toward DC. Grab a Metro map and keep it to study.  Check the info on fares on the sign below the manned booth, and ask any questions if you need help.  Purchase ticket from the machines only for the required amount (the very reasonable price differs for destination, time of day and day of the week).

4.     You are at the southeast end of the Green Line. Go to the Gallery Place/Chinatown station where you change to the Red Line for Union Station.

5.     At Union station buy a ticket on Amtrak to Wilmington, Delaware. Get off the train at the Wilmington Amtrak Station.

6.     Take Dover Transit (DART) Route 301 Express (stop is just outside the Amtrak station) to Dover (exact change, coins and $1.00 bills and no service on weekends).

7.     DART Route 106 will get you on base (again, no service on weekends).

Aviano AB, Italy
How to I travel to/from Aviano Air Base?  (Current as of Jun 06)

Aviano Air base is somewhat remote, and is actually split into 3 separate locations.  Fortunately, most of the services a space-a traveler will want are at the flightline location: the air terminal, the Mountain View Lodge, EuropCar rental agency, the exchange / commissary and the food court.

There is a train to the town of Aviano, however this is a very rural line, and there are only 3 departures daily from Sacile to Aviano, at 1407, 1707 and 1907.  Only the 1407 run will be helpful to most, since the Air Force shuttle bus stops running at about 1700.  There is only one run on Saturdays (1407), but there are 3 runs on Sundays (0910, 1307, 1706 and 1907).

From the train station in Aviano, look for the church bell tower (campanile), and walk toward it.  You will enter the town's main piazza, and you should walk around to the road that is behind the church.  On the same side of the road, to the right, there is a newsstand, and there is a bus stop a short distance beyond the newsstand.

If you take the bus from Pordenone to the Aviano Piazza, you can get to the gate for Area 2 (a base shuttle stop is immediately inside and goes between terminal, lodging and BX) by walking INTO town, take a left at the first light, and follow/hug the barbed wire fence until you get to the gate where the shuttle comes once per hour at 20 after the hour.

Also, the easiest way to buy tickets from Pordenone to Aviano is at the K2 internet store right in Piazza Risorgimento and then crossing the street to wait for a bus.  As you enter Piazza Risorgimento, with the train station at your back, there may also be a bus ticket office on the left side of the piazza.

If you cannot make this schedule, then you should ride the train to Pordenone, which is beyond Sacile.  These stations are on the Udine Line, that originates at Venezia Santa Lucia station.  Unless someone is arriving in Venice, or doing a day trip to Venice, the more convenient place to catch this train will be at Venezia Mestre station.  Whether you are going to Sacile or Pordenone, take the Udine Line.

On arrival in Pordenone, walk out to the front of the station, at the taxi stand, where there is a metal sign with a map of the town.  Look for Piazza Risorgimento, which is not too far from the station (perhaps a 10 minute, or less, walk).  This piazza is the terminal for the blue bus.  Purchase a ticket for Aviano in the office, and look for the bus stop in the piazza.  Be sure to validate your ticket on the bus, and tell the driver that you want "Aviano piazza."  Be sure to time your trip to arrive well before 1700.

Once at the piazza, the directions to the flightline area of the base are the same as above.

How to I travel to/from U.S. Army Base, Vicenza (Camp Caserma Ederle near Aviano AB)?

(Current as of Jun 06)

There is train service to the city of Vicenza from Treviso (the airport for Ryan Air arrivals) and from Venice (both Venezia Santa Lucia and Venezia Mestre).  If you are arriving on Ryan Air, there should be buses meeting the plane, which will take you into Mestre and Venice, but it is more efficient (if the train schedule is favorable) to take a taxi (about 10 Euros) to Treviso Centrale, the main train station (Vicenza is the last stop on the line from Treviso).

If you are at Aviano, you should take a train to Venezia Mestre, and then take a train from there to Vicenza.  Take the Air Force shuttle bus to the piazza in Aviano (the bus begins operating at about 0700, and stops at about 1700).

There is a train station in Aviano, but there is very limited service, because it is a rather rural area.  The train station is a bit away from the main piazza -- walk away from the front of the church, go to the left and out to a through road, then turn right and walk to the station.  The train leaves Aviano at 0525, 0732 and 1845 daily (0525, 0732,1026 and 1326 on Saturdays, 1026, 1326, 1626, 1822 and 2031 on Sundays).

The alternative is to take the bus to Pordenone, and take the train from there.  At the piazza in Aviano, walk behind the church to the newsstand and purchase bus ticket(s) (one per person), and walk to the bus stop on the same side of the road.  Board the blue bus when it comes, and ask for "Pordenone stazione" (not all buses stop at the train station -- you might be let out at Piazza Risorgimento in Pordenone), and be sure to validate your ticket on the bus.  Have the bus driver point you toward the station.

The same train runs through Sacile and Pordenone, the Udine Line.  This line will take you to Venezia Mestre, where you will change for the train to Vicenza.

Once you arrive at Vicenza, it is probably easiest (particularly if you have luggage) to take a taxi from the train station to the Army Base (all you need tell the driver is "Army base"), and that will cost about 10 Euros.

If you want to spend less, then you should purchase bus tickets (biglietti) at the newsstand inside the train station, walk outside, and wait for bus number 1, in front of the station, to the left as you exit.  The bus ticket should cost 1.50 Euro, and be sure to validate it in the little fare machine on the bus.

Look for the stucco wall with barbed wire on top (on your left)  about 5, or so, minutes down the road, and press the button for the next stop.

NAS Fort Worth TX
How do I use the local transportaion system to travel to/from NAS/JRB Fort Worth?  (Current as of Dec 07)

The following applies Monday thru Saturday (no Sunday service).  Walk (approx 30 minutes) or get a taxi from main gate (for approx $10) to the Ridgmar Mall.

Purchase a one day pass for one zone to ride both the T (local Fort Worth bus) and the TRE (Trinity Railway Express) from the bus driver for approx $3. Only purchase the one zone pass because you will only be in Fort Worth (from NAS Fort Worth to DFW Airport). Purchase the one day premium pass for two zones ($5) if you are travelling in both Fort Worth and Dallas (from NAS Fort Worth to Dallas Love Field).

From Ridgmar Mall, catch the T's route 2 W (Camp Bowie) eastbound bus to the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) (a 45 minute ride). The T's route 2 W (Camp Bowie) eastbound bus terminates at the ITC.  View the T's route 2 W (Camp Bowie) schedule  at www.the-t.com/Routes/routes.html

From the ITC, ride the TRE to the CentrePort/DFW Airport Station (about 30 minutes).
View the TRE schedules, maps and other info at www.trinityrailwayexpress.org

From the CentrePort/DFW Airport Station, hop on the T's DFW Airport Shuttle curbside at the Bus Stop areas to the far left as you leave the train. TRE passengers traveling from CentrePort/DFW Airport Station to airline terminals board Remote South buses on the northwest end of the rail station platform. Buses depart the station approximately every 15 minutes. At Remote South, passengers connect to buses serving either Terminals A and C,
Terminals B and E or Terminal D.

Note:  Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) Airport is not Dallas Love Field. These are two different airports. Southwest Airlines flies from Dallas Love Field.

The Fort Worth Greyhound terminal is at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC).  The Dallas Greyhound terminal is in downtown Dallas about six blocks from the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) Union Station.

Hickam AFB HI
How do I travel between Hickam AFB and the Hale Koa?  (Current as of June 06)

Take “The BusRoute 19 Bus (bus stop is about 200 yds from PAX terminal) to the Hilton Hawaiian Village (adjacent to Hale Koa, ~75 yds). Fare $2 per person, per trip and exact change is required. The bus fare is $1.00 if you can show a Medicare card, and the bus runs about every 30-40 minutes. Technically speaking no baggage is permitted that cannot be stowed under a seat or held on your lap, but the drivers tend to be somewhat tolerant of larger cases especially in off hours. The last seat before the rear exit on the bus's own right side (the left as you walk down the aisle) has a somewhat larger space behind it where bags can be stowed. If you have a choice, don't select a sideways facing seat near the front because occupants of them are often required to get up and move somewhere along the way when a person in a wheelchair wants to board, as those are where the wheelchair straps are located. It's a fairly long ride to Waikiki so just sit back and enjoy!

How do I travel between Hickam AFB and  Kanehoe Marine Corps Base using “The Bus?”
(Take Routes 19, 56, and 70: less than 2 hours, $4)

Follow the instructions above as if you are going to the Hale Koa Pay except get a transfer when you board the route 19 bus, and tell the Route 19 bus driver that you want to catch the Route 56 bus to go to the Marine Corps Base so the bus driver will tell you when to get off the Route 19 bus (at Alakea & Hotel, which is the transfer point for the Windward buses). Do not go to Waikiki.

Then, use your free transfer and transfer to the Route 56 bus (Kailua - Kanehoe) to go Windward to the Marine Corps Base (about 30 minutes). Tell the bus driver that you want to get to the Marine Corps Base at Kanehoe so that he will tell you when to get off the bus (often at the Aikahi Park Shopping Center).

Then, pay $2 fare and transfer to the Route 70 bus (Maunawili via MCBH) to get to the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kanehoe
