Andrews AFB MD

How do I get from Andrews AFB to Travis AFB using Space-A?  (Current as of May 06)

There normally are not many other trans-continental flights originating from Andrews but, as of Jun 06, Medevac missions on KC135s or C17s have been going 3 times a week (usually Mon, Wed & Sat with a 0800 Showtime with a departure bout 2 hours later).  Normally 10 seats are available for Space-a travelers but if more passengers are hoping to get on, the terminal staff will try to get more seats released--sometimes at the last minute. All waiting passengers are usually accommodated, but if possible it is a good idea to have a signup date that is at least a week old instead of being a walk-in on that day.
Potential interim stops (where passengers can de-plane or others can board for the remainder of the flight) are Scott AFB IL, Peterson AFB and McCHord AFB.  Time on the ground at each stop is 1 to 2 hours so the flights usually arrive at Travis between 5 and 6 p.m.  The air crew has a RON there and usually departs for Miramar MCAS CA the next morning with a showtime of 0800.

The aircraft then returns to its home base which is usually Charleston AFB SC but sometimes McChord AFB WA. However, if the medical personnel on board are based at Andrews it will take them there first.  There is free long-term parking (no time limit) within easy walking distance of the Andrews terminal.

How do I travel between Andrews, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and BWI. Dulles or Reagan National Airports or the Greyhound Station?  (Current as of:  May 2007)

1.     An on-base shuttle may be available (check with the Pax desk or billeting for the latest info).  To get off base, engage in conversation with your fellow passengers.  It is quite possible that they would be happy to take you to your exact destination, the gate, or the Metro Station, if it happens to be on their way.  Also, Andrews has a “Share-A-Ride” program and is a free service provided by the Andrews commuters.   Look for the pickup points labeled with a brown and white “Share-A-Ride” sign.  You have an option of getting a taxi off-base.  Authorized taxi pick-up companies are Checker Cab, 301-864-7700, and Silver Cab, 301-577-2000.   During heightened Force Protection Conditions, taxis are prohibited on base and at other times you’ll need to pre-announce taxi pick-ups to the 316 SFS law enforcement desk at 301-981-2001/2002.

2.

3.     Finally, you always have the option of walking (in good weather).  It is a healthy walk with a carry-on (the best way to travel).  The gate is to the right out of the terminal about a mile or so (on the other side of the Exchange).

4.     There may be off-base bus schedules/ Metro maps at the PAX volunteer desk.  Outside the gate, cross the street to the bus stop shelter in front of the Quality Inn (near McDonalds).  Ask the driver to ensure that you have the bus to either the Branch Ave Metro station (closest) or the Suitland Metro Rail Station.  The fare is approx $1.35 (ask for a transfer ticket that you may be able to use for reduced fares later).

5.     .

6.     At the Metro Stop, trains only go one way back toward DC (Green Line towards Greenbelt).  Check the info on fares on the sign below the manned booth, and ask any questions if you need help.  Purchase tickets from the machines only for the required amount (the very reasonable price differs for the time of day and the day of the week).  You are at the southeast end of the Green Line, and you need to go to L’Enfant Plaza to change to the other lines.

  • If you want to go to BWI, stay on the Green Line to the last stop, Greenbelt (at its other end in the northeast), get off, and wait for the B30 bus which goes directly to BWI.  The shelter for the BWI bus is the 4th shelter outside the Metro Station.  The cost is minimal (seniors ride for 60 cents), and the ride goes up the Baltimore Washington Parkway through an agricultural experimental farm – a very scenic ride.  The bus stops twice at the terminal, and the second stop is for the AMC terminal (upstairs).  The USO is on the lower level to the right.
  • If you want to go to Dulles, take the Metrobus Route 5A from L’Enfant Plaza to Dulles.  Another option exists from Metro’s Orange Line from West Falls Church station using the Washington Flyer bus to Dulles. The Dulles USO (near the Starbucks on baggage claim level) can help with transportation.
  • If you want to go to Reagan National, then transfer to the Yellow Line at L’Enfant Plaza.  The Yellow Line goes to Reagan National.  The Reagan USO can help with transportation.
  • If you want to go to the Greyhound Station, then transfer to the Red Line at Gallery Place/Chinatown and head towards Glenmont. Get off at Union Station (2nd stop). The Greyhound station is next door to Union Station.

7.     Coming the other way, the above routes should work in reverse.

How do I travel between Andrews AFB and Dover AFB using ground transportation? (Current as of:  May 07)

1.     The “Best” way may be a one-way rental car.  Check with the large rental car companies (hint – start with Hertz).  If you are coming from Dover to Andrews then short-notice rentals on weekends (especially Sundays) may be difficult to arrange.

2.     If you want to go by commercial ground transportation then see the section above on how to get off-base and to the Metro Station.

3.     At the Metro Stop, trains only go one way, back toward DC. Grab a Metro map and keep it to study.  Check the info on fares on the sign below the manned booth, and ask any questions if you need help.  Purchase ticket from the machines only for the required amount (the very reasonable price differs for destination, time of day and day of the week).

4.     You are at the southeast end of the Green Line. Go to the Gallery Place/Chinatown station where you change to the Red Line for Union Station.

5.     At Union station buy a ticket on Amtrak to Wilmington, Delaware. Get off the train at the Wilmington Amtrak Station.

6.     Take Dover Transit (DART) Route 301 Express (stop is just outside the Amtrak station) to Dover (exact change, coins and $1.00 bills and no service on weekends).

7.     DART Route 106 will get you on base (again, no service on weekends).

Aviano AB, Italy
How to I travel to/from Aviano Air Base?  (Current as of Jun 06)

Aviano Air base is somewhat remote, and is actually split into 3 separate locations.  Fortunately, most of the services a space-a traveler will want are at the flightline location: the air terminal, the Mountain View Lodge, EuropCar rental agency, the exchange / commissary and the food court.

There is a train to the town of Aviano, however this is a very rural line, and there are only 3 departures daily from Sacile to Aviano, at 1407, 1707 and 1907.  Only the 1407 run will be helpful to most, since the Air Force shuttle bus stops running at about 1700.  There is only one run on Saturdays (1407), but there are 3 runs on Sundays (0910, 1307, 1706 and 1907).

From the train station in Aviano, look for the church bell tower (campanile), and walk toward it.  You will enter the town's main piazza, and you should walk around to the road that is behind the church.  On the same side of the road, to the right, there is a newsstand, and there is a bus stop a short distance beyond the newsstand.

If you take the bus from Pordenone to the Aviano Piazza, you can get to the gate for Area 2 (a base shuttle stop is immediately inside and goes between terminal, lodging and BX) by walking INTO town, take a left at the first light, and follow/hug the barbed wire fence until you get to the gate where the shuttle comes once per hour at 20 after the hour.

Also, the easiest way to buy tickets from Pordenone to Aviano is at the K2 internet store right in Piazza Risorgimento and then crossing the street to wait for a bus.  As you enter Piazza Risorgimento, with the train station at your back, there may also be a bus ticket office on the left side of the piazza.

If you cannot make this schedule, then you should ride the train to Pordenone, which is beyond Sacile.  These stations are on the Udine Line, that originates at Venezia Santa Lucia station.  Unless someone is arriving in Venice, or doing a day trip to Venice, the more convenient place to catch this train will be at Venezia Mestre station.  Whether you are going to Sacile or Pordenone, take the Udine Line.

On arrival in Pordenone, walk out to the front of the station, at the taxi stand, where there is a metal sign with a map of the town.  Look for Piazza Risorgimento, which is not too far from the station (perhaps a 10 minute, or less, walk).  This piazza is the terminal for the blue bus.  Purchase a ticket for Aviano in the office, and look for the bus stop in the piazza.  Be sure to validate your ticket on the bus, and tell the driver that you want "Aviano piazza."  Be sure to time your trip to arrive well before 1700.

Once at the piazza, the directions to the flightline area of the base are the same as above.

How to I travel to/from U.S. Army Base, Vicenza (Camp Caserma Ederle near Aviano AB)?

(Current as of Jun 06)

There is train service to the city of Vicenza from Treviso (the airport for Ryan Air arrivals) and from Venice (both Venezia Santa Lucia and Venezia Mestre).  If you are arriving on Ryan Air, there should be buses meeting the plane, which will take you into Mestre and Venice, but it is more efficient (if the train schedule is favorable) to take a taxi (about 10 Euros) to Treviso Centrale, the main train station (Vicenza is the last stop on the line from Treviso).

If you are at Aviano, you should take a train to Venezia Mestre, and then take a train from there to Vicenza.  Take the Air Force shuttle bus to the piazza in Aviano (the bus begins operating at about 0700, and stops at about 1700).

There is a train station in Aviano, but there is very limited service, because it is a rather rural area.  The train station is a bit away from the main piazza -- walk away from the front of the church, go to the left and out to a through road, then turn right and walk to the station.  The train leaves Aviano at 0525, 0732 and 1845 daily (0525, 0732,1026 and 1326 on Saturdays, 1026, 1326, 1626, 1822 and 2031 on Sundays).

The alternative is to take the bus to Pordenone, and take the train from there.  At the piazza in Aviano, walk behind the church to the newsstand and purchase bus ticket(s) (one per person), and walk to the bus stop on the same side of the road.  Board the blue bus when it comes, and ask for "Pordenone stazione" (not all buses stop at the train station -- you might be let out at Piazza Risorgimento in Pordenone), and be sure to validate your ticket on the bus.  Have the bus driver point you toward the station.

The same train runs through Sacile and Pordenone, the Udine Line.  This line will take you to Venezia Mestre, where you will change for the train to Vicenza.

Once you arrive at Vicenza, it is probably easiest (particularly if you have luggage) to take a taxi from the train station to the Army Base (all you need tell the driver is "Army base"), and that will cost about 10 Euros.

If you want to spend less, then you should purchase bus tickets (biglietti) at the newsstand inside the train station, walk outside, and wait for bus number 1, in front of the station, to the left as you exit.  The bus ticket should cost 1.50 Euro, and be sure to validate it in the little fare machine on the bus.

Look for the stucco wall with barbed wire on top (on your left)  about 5, or so, minutes down the road, and press the button for the next stop.

NAS Fort Worth TX
How do I use the local transportaion system to travel to/from NAS/JRB Fort Worth?  (Current as of Dec 07)

The following applies Monday thru Saturday (no Sunday service).  Walk (approx 30 minutes) or get a taxi from main gate (for approx $10) to the Ridgmar Mall.

Purchase a one day pass for one zone to ride both the T (local Fort Worth bus) and the TRE (Trinity Railway Express) from the bus driver for approx $3. Only purchase the one zone pass because you will only be in Fort Worth (from NAS Fort Worth to DFW Airport). Purchase the one day premium pass for two zones ($5) if you are travelling in both Fort Worth and Dallas (from NAS Fort Worth to Dallas Love Field).

From Ridgmar Mall, catch the T's route 2 W (Camp Bowie) eastbound bus to the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) (a 45 minute ride). The T's route 2 W (Camp Bowie) eastbound bus terminates at the ITC.  View the T's route 2 W (Camp Bowie) schedule  at www.the-t.com/Routes/routes.html

From the ITC, ride the TRE to the CentrePort/DFW Airport Station (about 30 minutes).
View the TRE schedules, maps and other info at www.trinityrailwayexpress.org

From the CentrePort/DFW Airport Station, hop on the T's DFW Airport Shuttle curbside at the Bus Stop areas to the far left as you leave the train. TRE passengers traveling from CentrePort/DFW Airport Station to airline terminals board Remote South buses on the northwest end of the rail station platform. Buses depart the station approximately every 15 minutes. At Remote South, passengers connect to buses serving either Terminals A and C,
Terminals B and E or Terminal D.

Note:  Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) Airport is not Dallas Love Field. These are two different airports. Southwest Airlines flies from Dallas Love Field.

The Fort Worth Greyhound terminal is at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC).  The Dallas Greyhound terminal is in downtown Dallas about six blocks from the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) Union Station.

Hickam AFB HI
How do I travel between Hickam AFB and the Hale Koa?  (Current as of June 06)

Take “The BusRoute 19 Bus (bus stop is about 200 yds from PAX terminal) to the Hilton Hawaiian Village (adjacent to Hale Koa, ~75 yds). Fare $2 per person, per trip and exact change is required. The bus fare is $1.00 if you can show a Medicare card, and the bus runs about every 30-40 minutes. Technically speaking no baggage is permitted that cannot be stowed under a seat or held on your lap, but the drivers tend to be somewhat tolerant of larger cases especially in off hours. The last seat before the rear exit on the bus's own right side (the left as you walk down the aisle) has a somewhat larger space behind it where bags can be stowed. If you have a choice, don't select a sideways facing seat near the front because occupants of them are often required to get up and move somewhere along the way when a person in a wheelchair wants to board, as those are where the wheelchair straps are located. It's a fairly long ride to Waikiki so just sit back and enjoy!

How do I travel between Hickam AFB and  Kanehoe Marine Corps Base using “The Bus?”
(Take Routes 19, 56, and 70: less than 2 hours, $4)

Follow the instructions above as if you are going to the Hale Koa Pay except get a transfer when you board the route 19 bus, and tell the Route 19 bus driver that you want to catch the Route 56 bus to go to the Marine Corps Base so the bus driver will tell you when to get off the Route 19 bus (at Alakea & Hotel, which is the transfer point for the Windward buses). Do not go to Waikiki.

Then, use your free transfer and transfer to the Route 56 bus (Kailua - Kanehoe) to go Windward to the Marine Corps Base (about 30 minutes). Tell the bus driver that you want to get to the Marine Corps Base at Kanehoe so that he will tell you when to get off the bus (often at the Aikahi Park Shopping Center).

Then, pay $2 fare and transfer to the Route 70 bus (Maunawili via MCBH) to get to the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kanehoe (KMCBH) (less than 10 minutes).

How do I travel between Hale Koa and Pearl Harbor? (current as of Mar 08)
From the bus stop across the street from Hale Koa (in front of the parking garage) take the #19 or the #20 or the #42 bus, and when you pay ask for a transfer--if you do not have a bus pass.

Get off the bus on Nimitz Highway at Paiea Street, or any of the other couple of stops on Nimitz just before the airport. (A signal to get off at the next stop is seeing a big Harley-Davidson dealership on the right.)

Wait for the #9 bus, use your transfer to 'pay' when you board, and take the bus to the Navy Exchange/Commissary complex. (Ask the driver to tell you when the stop comes up--it's actually not easy to see the NEX from the road, and you'll have to walk downhill along a narrow path to the parking area and stores.)

If possible, pick up a schedule for the #9 route when you are on that bus, because it will show you the routing and the times that it runs.

On the way back, take the #9 again (getting a transfer if you don't have a pass), this time from a bus stop just up on the road from the end of the NEX where they install car radios. (You will have walked in a big loop around the Commissary, NEX, and incidental shops, but you will not be all the way back to where you got off.) There's a cement bench at the stop for your comfort while waiting. Get off the #9 just after it passes the airport entrance road (ask the driver for help if you need it to spot the stop), and transfer to the 19, 20 or 42--all headed for Waikiki. Get off at the combined Hale Koa/Hilton Hawaiian Village stop.

IF YOUR INTENTION IS TO ACTUALLY GO ON BOARD PEARL, TAKE THE #9 TO THE MAIN GATE (WELL BEYOND THE NEX STOP). YOU'LL HAVE TO WALK IN FROM THERE unless you are on one of the few early morning or late afternoon runs that loop around to some of the employment centers on base. These runs are noted on the printed schedule.

Return instructions remain the same--#9 to just past the airport on Nimitz Highway, then transfer to any of the Waikiki-bound buses.

(If you want to go to HICKAM, the #19 bus from Waikiki (as above) does go on base [only ID card holders allowed] and passes near the BX with the commissary a few blocks behind. The bus ends up at the Hickam terminal, and then restarts its return route from there at the scheduled time.)

Kaneohe Bay MCB HI
How do I get to Hale Koa from Kaneohe MCB?  (Current as of: June 2006)

A taxi can cost $70 or more. If you have the time, and if it’s between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and if you can hold all your luggage on your lap or stick it under your seat, here’s how to make the trip by bus:

1. On base, in front of the Commissary and elementary school at the corner of Mokapu Road and Harris, board the #70 bus (runs daily approximately every 1 ½ hours between about 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.) headed toward Kailua (“Kye-LOO-ah”). Pay $2.00 exact fare (or $1.00 if you can show a Medicare card) and ask for a transfer. Tell the driver you want to get off in Kailua at Oneawa (“Oh-nay-AH-wa”) in order to take a bus to Honolulu. (Ask if you can get an extra transfer to use at Ala Moana (Ah-lah Mo-AH-nah”) in order to transfer to a bus to Waikiki, or whether you’ll have to pay another fare—I’m not sure about this part!)

2. Get off in Kailua, at Oneawa, and take the #56, #57 or #57A bus toward Honolulu, using your transfer instead of paying again. Tell the driver you are going to the Ala Moana shopping center where you will transfer for a bus to Waikiki and ask to have the right stop pointed out to you.

3. Get off where the driver tells you to, at the back side of the Ala Moana shopping center.

4. Take the #19, #20 or #8 bus toward Waikiki (paying another fare if required...ask, as noted above).

5. Get off at the first bus stop after the bus turns onto Kalia (“Kah-LEE-ah”)Road. The stop is right after the bus passes the main entrance to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the same stop also serves the Hale Koa. Walk ahead to the Hale Koa entrance.

McGuire AFB NJ
How do I travel between McGuire AFB and civilization?

(Current as of: June 2006)

New Jersey Transit Route #317 services McGuire and you can take it to Philadelphia.   Go out the S. Bolling Blvd gate (just past the shoppette) and the bus stop is near the Chinese restaurant to the right across the street ( Wrightstown-Cookstown Road).  On the Route 317 map, this stop is probably nearer the Cookstown stop than the Ft Dix stop and the schedule shows approx 15 minutes between the two stops. Looking at the Google maps for the various stops I would say the transit time between McGuire and Dix stops would be about 6-7 minutes.  It is a 2 hour ride to Philly and don’t forget to request a mil discount with your ID card!

Naples, Italy (Capodichino Airport)
How do I travel between Capodichino Airport (NAS Naples) and Napoli Centrale ?

(Current as of May 2006)

If you are arriving at Naples, you will land at the civil airport, Capodichino, and you will arrive at the U.S. Navy passenger terminal.  If you want to try to obtain a room at the Capo Inn ($37 per night as of Spring  2006), exit from the passenger terminal and turn left.  Walk down the sidewalk for about 100 yards, then walk between buildings to an area that looks like a piazza.  Go across this area, and continue to the right beyond the movie theater and library.  You will see the entrance to the Capo Inn on your left.  Rooms are given to space-a personnel at 1600, if available.  You may ask to renew each morning.  Sometimes the desk will renew immediately, and sometimes they will ask you to check out, and return at 1600.  If you must check out, there is a room where you may lock up your luggage, so you can spend a worry-free day.  There is a shuttle bus that will take you to other areas, which leaves from the end of this piazza.  If you are staying at the Navy Lodge, you will need to take this bus.  To go to the main train station, Napoli Centrale, turn to the right after you exit from the air terminal.  Walk out the gate, and down the access road (you will see a fortified and camouflaged Italian Army guard post along this road -- they will not require you to show ID in either direction, and, most often, will respond pleasantly if you say "buon giorno").

At the end of the access road, turn right, and walk to the civil air terminal building.  When you enter the building, go to the little store to the right, and ask for bus tickets (biglietti).  Each ticket will cost about 1.50 Euro.  If you're coming back, get enough tickets for each way (one ticket per person).  Walk out of the terminal building and go to the right to the bus islands that are ahead of you.  Go to the last island, and wait for bus 3S (it is orange -- there is one other orange bus that uses this stop, which is non-stop to the station, and costs something like 5 Euros).  Board Bus 3S, and use the little machine attached to a post to validate your bus ticket (there will be a big penalty if an inspector boards the bus, and your ticket is not validated).  There should be a place to cache your luggage, if you have any.  You can go to the absolute end of the line, but there's no need to do that.  When you see ahead of the bus a large area with lots of buses, and a McDonald's on the left side of the street, get off at that corner.  If you are arriving at Napoli Centrale, ignore all the guys at the tracks who want to steer you to a taxi.  Walk out the main doors of the station, and turn to the right, toward McDonald's.  You will pass a tobacco store and newsstand.  Stop there and buy bus tickets for your trip up.  Keep walking along the outside of the McDonald's to the curb, and wait there for Bus 3S (see link for frequency).  The bus should stop, but be prepared to wave the driver to stop.  After you enter the bus, be sure to validate your tickets in the little machine you will see attached to a pole.  Ride this bus to the end of the line, at the airport.  Walk across the front of the civil air terminal building, and follow the access road around to your right. You will come eventually to an access road on the left, which ends at the main gate to the Navy base.  If it is after about 1700, the sentry at the gate will check your ID.  Otherwise, go to your left, to the gatehouse, and show your ID to the person at the window.  As you walk down this main entrance road, you will see the air terminal on your left.

Naval Station Rota, Spain
How do I get my passport stamped properly when transiting Rota? Note: if you are just transiting Rota and don’t plan to leave the installation then this does not apply to you!

(Current as of Sep 2008)

Take your passport and AMC boarding pass (this is your proof you entered Spain on a military flight and it also has your "Flight Number" for a form you’ll need to fill out) and pickup a 24-hr gate pass on your way out the gate.  Continue out the Rota Gate, straight through the first full traffic circle, turn into the first street on the left (Calle de Zorilla) and continue for one block.  On the right you will see the police station (a small sign is mounted on the building wall at the entrance).  Present your passport and boarding pass to whoever greets you.  If you were not issued a boarding pass, present the small white slip of paper used as your personal day pass into the base.  You were given this upon arrival at the terminal.  The police won’t want this as proof, and will simply ask what date you arrived at the terminal.  They will return your stamped (or provide  a stub to carry with your passport)  passport  within several minutes.  If you have a car, exit the Rota Gate and take the first road to the right.  Immediately on the left there is a public parking lot.  Leave your locked car here and follow the walking instructions.  There is no parking available at the police station.  This will be no more than a five minute walk.

Once you return to NS Rota just show your passport and the old day pass.  The officer will look at both and issue a new day pass.

NAS Sigonella, Sicily
How do I travel between the Catania Airport and NAS Sigonella?

(Current as of Dec 07)

The local orange bus AMT Route 457 (Weekday Schedule and Weekend/Holiday Schedule) departs Catania Airport about every 20 minutes from 0500 to 2330 and runs between the airport (Aeroporto) and the main train station (Stazione). This route costs 0.80 Euros.

From the main train station (Piazza Giovanni XXIII Stazione Centrale), which is also the main bus stop for the blue (coach) buses, catch a blue coach to "Sigonella NAS I". You get on the bus that has "RAMACCA" or "MINEO" on its scrolling destination sign. The two companies that go between the train station and Sigonella NAS I are either Etna or Interbus (fermata 13 near the Etna/Interbus building) or AST (fermata 14 nearer to the train station on an island in the middle of the AST parking lot). Both cost around 2 Euros per person one way (andatta). These blue buses stop at the fermata just outside the gate at NAS I. Between NAS I and NAS II, just use the free shuttle (a white bus).

Here’s some additional tips:

  1. The AST fermata 14 can have as many as 22 buses stopped there at the same time!!
  2. At the Piazza Giovanni XXIII Stazione Centrale, the Etna/Interbus bus stops (fermatas) are not the same as the AST bus stops (fermatas).
  3. In Italy, even if you are standing at a bus stop, it is very important to hold two fingers out from your side to get the bus driver to stop for you!!
  4. The blue buses do not run on Sundays in Italy.

NAS Whidbey Island almost brings new meaning to the term "isolated."  It is located in a very lovely area, on an island (of course), roughly 2 hours drive north of Seattle (depending on traffic).  The base actually consists of 2 separate bases, the Naval Air Station (Ault Field) and the Seaplane Base.  Many distances are long.  At least one auto rental agency (Enterprise) will pick up, during normal working hours, at the air terminal, but Enterprise will not do one-way rentals.  There is a Navy Lodge located at the Seaplane Base, which is a fair distance from the air terminal.  I do not believe that there is an on-base shuttle bus.  Some taxis may be allowed on base (not confirmed).  It would be a mistake to arrive without some form of transportation arranged, or possibly getting some help from a fellow passenger, who has a car on the base.

There is one shuttle service that can come onto the base, and pick up passengers.  Reservations are required.  Their schedules and rates are available online: at the SeaTac Shuttle Website.  Almost directly across from the air terminal there is a McDonald's, which is open every day.  Turn left at the McDonald's, and walk one block to Intruder Street.  Turn right on Intruder Street, then walk past the galley to BEQ 2701 (ahead, on the right side -- there is prominent signage at this building).  In front of the building, there is a sign for a shuttle stop.

NAS Willow Grove PA
How do I travel from Philadelphia to NAS Willow Grove?

(Current as of Nov 08)

Take the SEPTA R1 train from the airport (during week days the train number is SEPTA R2) to the Suburban Station and switch to the SEPTA R2 and get off at the Willow Grove station.  Walk across the railroad tracks onto York Road and make a left on Easton Road staying on the left side and walk to the bus stop across the street from Barnes and Noble book store.  Then take the SEPTA #55 bus towards Doylestown (not Olney) and get off at the front gate at Willow Grove Air Station.  Walk across the street, go though the Gate and ask direction for the Subway which is right in front of the Terminal.  The train cost $10 and the bus $2, they do offer a senior fare for those 65 and older when a Medicare card is shown.

Yokota AB, Japan
How do I travel from Yokota AB to Hardy Barrracks?

(Current as of Jan 07)

Services run a shuttle from Yokota AB to New Sanno/Hardy Barracks twice a day – cost approx $5 per person - not sure if it runs weekends, but Kanto Lodge and New Sanno can fill in the blanks and New Sanno staff are happy to hail and direct a taxi if you get the shuttle that doesn't go all the way to HB.

Here's how to use the train and subway to get to Hardy Barracks:

From Yokota's air terminal, catch the on-base shuttle bus to the main gate. From there, you can walk to the train station, or take a rather short taxi ride (ask the gate guard to point you in the right direction for Fussa Eki (Fussa Station)).

At the station, use the ticket vending machine, for a ticket to Harajuku Eki (there should be a map above the ticket machines, showing stations -- look for Shinjuku, then look south to Harajuku; the map will also show you the amount of fare to put into the machine).

Take the train from Fussa to Tachikawa. At Tachikawa, transfer to the Chuo Line for Shinjuku.

At Shinjuku, you will change trains again. Look for the Yamanote Line. Your train should be on track number 12 -- it will show the next station down the line to be Yoyogi. You will go to the second station, Harajuku.

Be sure to keep your tickets with you. Whenever you encounter a gate, put your ticket in the slot, and be sure to pick it up when it reappears at the top of the mechanism.

When you get to Harajuku, exit from the station, and look across the street for the Snoopy Store. If you see that, you've come out the correct exit. Don't cross the street, but go to your right, to the subway (there will be an obvious entrance going down, from the sidewalk). You are at Meiji Jinju-Mae ("front of Meiji Shrine") station for the subway. At the ticket vending machine, look 2 stations down, and that's your fare (I can't remember whether the map has the station names in English).

You will be going 2 stops, to Nogizaka. The first stop (and you should see it on the platform sign) is Omotesando (a nice shopping area, by the way). When you reach Nogizaka, walk toward the rear of the train, and take that exit from the station, up to the street.

From here, you may walk (about 15 minutes, depending on speed and suitcase burden), or you could take a taxi.

Look to your left when you reach the street, and you should see a traffic tunnel (if you don't see this tunnel, you've taken the wrong exit). Walk through the tunnel, and go to the right as soon as you exit from the tunnel (it is a "T" intersection, in any event). As you are walking, you will see the small military complex on your right. You will see an entrance post, and that's where you pass into the complex. The lodging is to your left after you enter the base.

A taxi driver might not know "Hardy Barracks," so you could ask to be taken to the cemetery, "Aoyama Bochi," which is across the street from the lodging. Look for a ramen hut on one corner, and an Irish pub diagonally across the street, and, of course, the 3-story billet.
